Upcoming Old West Halloween Game on Fantasy Grounds
October 11, 2017 Fantasy Grounds

Happy GURPSDayGURPSophiles!

I’ve had my head down and nose to the grindstone lately, and I can finally share some of what I’ve been working on. If all goes according to plan, I’ll be GMing my first online GURPS game using Fantasy Grounds (and the wonderful GURPS ruleset created by Ronnke and others) in a couple of weeks, an Old West/Horror one-shot for Halloween.

The four pre-gen PCs are pictured above.

  • William Caine, retired sheriff and owner of the Caine cattle ranch.
  • Carmalita Vazquez, a cowgirl Regulator who helps keep the ranch running.
  • Lawrence Caine, William’s son and a professional gambler.
  • Franklin Dunne, the other of the Caines’ most trusted Regulators.

You can download their character sheets here.

Details on the adventure itself I’m keeping under wraps until after the game is run, but then I’ll be posting notes for those who might want to run it themselves (face-to-face or online). Here’s a sneak peek picture of how my Fantasy Grounds is looking so far.

The game begins with…

“Last month, the four Butcher brothers rustled a dozen head of your cattle, sold them, and took off. You received word last week that they were spotted in Santa Fe, though they had headed north by the time you arrived. For three days you have been tracking them, and now finally — on Halloween morning, 1878 — the chase may come to an end: from a quarter mile ahead, you smell the unmistakable aroma of hot coffee on the wind…”

I still have a lot of prep to get done, but I feel like it’s shaping up nicely and should be a good time. Wish us luck! Details to follow. (More on GURPS and Fantasy Grounds in the next post.)

  1. You already have your players?

    • Hiya, Tom! I do for this one, aye (at least, I think so, waiting on last confirmation)… but assuming it isn’t a dumpster fire, it should hopefully lead to more in the future. 🙂

      • I’ll take a look at Fantasy Grounds. What do you of Roll20?

        • Oh, Roll20 is great! Solid, 7/10 stars, good stuff. I had planned my online debut to be with Roll20, in fact — just an encounter, not an actual one-shot — but that ended up not happening (nothing to do with Roll20, https://www.themook.net/gamegeekery/scattershot-july-2017/). I still have a Pro level account there and keep up on the forums, but it seems unlikely I will renew in March when it’s due… no one needs two VTTs! 🙂

When the Roll20 encounter fell apart, I started looking more and more at Fantasy Grounds and realized that, to me, it’s 9/10 stars. The unofficial ruleset that Ronnke has put together is fantastic, does pretty much everything you can do with an unofficial project, and I just prefer the way FG does things. I’m really hoping this inaugural one-shot runs smoothly (most of that anxiety is because I didn’t leave myself enough time for prep, because I wanted to squeeze it in before Halloween).

One thing I do think Roll20 does a bit better is the community aspect, and connecting players with GMs. But that’s kind of a ‘meta’ thing — in terms of the actual play, I’m throwing in with Fantasy Grounds.
