{"id":60,"date":"2007-09-08T20:43:55","date_gmt":"2007-09-09T00:43:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.themook.net\/blog\/2007\/09\/08\/slow-going\/"},"modified":"2008-01-23T18:40:55","modified_gmt":"2008-01-23T22:40:55","slug":"slow-going","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.themook.net\/blog\/2007\/09\/08\/slow-going\/","title":{"rendered":"Slow Going"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am (still) posting this from a dialup connection, on a computer that doesn&#8217;t even have a rackin&#8217; frackin&#8217; <strong>mousewheel<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>You might not think having a mousewheel is a big deal, but it&#8217;s kind of like a thumb &#8211; you don&#8217;t really realize how useful the damn thing is until a mob enforcer comes and rips it off with a pair of needle-nose pliers.<\/p>\n<p>ANYway, here&#8217;s a completely self-indulgent list of things I can&#8217;t do properly until I have my beloved broadband internet connection back:  \ud83d\ude41<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Can&#8217;t play Soldier of Fortune<\/li>\n<li>Can&#8217;t play Battlefield 2142<\/li>\n<li>Can&#8217;t play World of Warcraft<\/li>\n<li>Can&#8217;t chat on Teamspeak\/Ventrilo<\/li>\n<li>Can&#8217;t download any .mp3s<\/li>\n<li>Can&#8217;t open more than one tab while trying to browse the net<\/li>\n<li>Can&#8217;t connect to any kind of &#8216;secure&#8217; webpage quicker than two-and-a-half <strong>MINUTES<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It&#8217;s crippling *, and I have lots of phantom pains and longings, but I&#8217;m writing because progress <em>is<\/em> being made, though very, very  s l o w l y .<\/p>\n<p>My freight pods arrived yesterday morning, and somehow I&#8217;ve already unloaded them into our garage here by myself. It sucked, but I managed to do it without having a massive coronary, which I consider a plus.<\/p>\n<p>There were a few casualties of the move I&#8217;ve already noticed, like a large Chessex gaming map that is now bent\/folded beyond use, and a few books here and there that got folded, spindled, and mutilated. My biggest concern is my computer monitor &#8211; when we packed the pods in Massachusetts the box was vertical; when I opened the pods here the box was horizontal with three other heavy boxes on top of it.<\/p>\n<p>OOPSIE. Still haven&#8217;t had the cajones to open it and look yet, but I&#8217;d say it&#8217;s pretty likely the flat-screen is toast.<\/p>\n<p>Steps to be taken in the coming week are: have a cable tech come out and run me a wire so I can get back online (though I&#8217;m still fuming over $70\/month; but they&#8217;re the only game in town, so if I want cable I&#8217;ll bend over and take it); have a Dish network tech come out and run me a satellite box so I can have TV in my bedroom; apply for a job.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll keep y&#8217;all posted as things develop.  \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>* Yes, I&#8217;m aware that complaining so much about not having cable internet access in a world where literally millions are starving, or dying of preventable diseases, or suffering through any one of a dozen horrors I will thankfully never have to endure makes me a shallow and spoiled bastard.
