My sister and I will officially be out of the house/apartment we’re currently in by September 1st, just a couple weeks away. Reservations have been made, deadlines have been established, changes of address have been completed.

I am composing this in a hurry – I had thought the cable would hold out until we were gone, but when I rolled out of bed this morning I noticed that all of the television channels are blocked and say ‘Access Not Authorized’, so I fear it’s just a matter of time before they realize they cancelled the tv but not the internet access. Depending on a number of things, I may be offline for as long as a few months, so if it seems like I suddenly disappear off the face of the virtual world, you’ll know why.

The plan is this: the freight and moving company will drop off two packing containers on Tuesday, August 28th; I will fill them with whatever worldly belongings I can hang on to and they will be picked up for transport on Wednesday, August 29th; and finally, my flight will leave at 6:00am on Thursday, August 30th.

Tragically, I will no longer be living with my younger sister and her two children as I have the past four years – I’ll be moving to Arizona, in with my older sister and my father; they will be finding a smaller place here in New England. I am going to miss them terribly, it’s already broken my heart to realize I will no longer be here to see my niece and nephew grow up, but frankly it’s my own damn fault so I’m trying not to dwell on it.

Though Arizona is about as far from my beloved New England as I can get, and I don’t know anyone out that way except a few relatives, there are a lot of good things about moving there. First and foremost, I will be able to spend time with my aging Dad. He had a profound impact on my childhood and on the man I am today, and warm memories of times spent with him as a boy always fill my head – I’m looking forward to being by his side again and reconnecting after so many years apart.

On a much more selfish note, it will also be nice to know there will be food in the house every day, and I won’t have to worry about the cable/electric/phone/etc. being shut off from week to week. Well, not the cable, as my sister in Arizona still has DIAL-UP for internet access – you heard me right! So obviously one of the first things I need to do, once I find a job of course, is to get cable internet access.

As I said, it seems pretty likely that my current internet access will be cancelled any time now, and I don’t know when it will be up and running in Arizona – so if I seem to have fallen off the grid, just know that it is (hopefully) only temporary and I’ll be back online as soon as possible.

Wish me luck!

Forum Discussion

Well, it’s finally go-time!
