LoL :D

I decided in the end to give "Poller" the benefit of the doubt, since his profile doesn't contain any spam-sell links ... so for now I'll let the post stand 8)

My favorite RPG rules set is GURPS, followed close second by FUDGE. Everything else is just crap 8) (though I naturally have to give props to D&D for starting the whole ball o' wax)

Hehehehe, well - in these days of constant spammer attack, surely you can forgive our suspicions of a new member joining out of the blue and posting a single quick question in one of the quietest forums 8) 8)

Anyway, glad to hear you're a real human being, and glad you wandered onto TheMook.Net :D

"Spamming" on the internet is analogous to junk mail and sales phone calls - it's people trying to make money by being obnoxious and intrusive scumbags. When I get junk mail I throw it away; when I get uninvited sales calls I hang up the phone - but these parasitic bottom-feeding companies know that for every 10,000 people who do that, there'll be one idiot who actually buys their product. This encourages them to think that if sending 10,000 emails results in 1 sale, then 1,000,000 emails will result in 100 sales.

So the first generation of internet spamming was (and still is) automated - they attack email (I probably delete 60%-70% of all incoming email because it's crap like "Viagra Now!" or "Online Pharmacy!" or "Hot Sluts in YOUR Town!"); they attack blog comments (by posting comments that include about 20 different websites all selling that same crap); they attack message boards (by auto-joining any random board they can find and posting nothing but "Buy our crap!").

So, just like in the offline world, where I never answer the phone if I don't recognize the caller ID, I have to take steps to head off these bile-sucking bags of puke - all email goes through a spam filter at the ISP level, all blog comments have to be moderated before they go live, all new message board accounts have to enter a random, human-readable only code to confirm they're not a piece of software.

That was first generation - all automated, so automated defenses can somewhat take out their bite.

Companies then began engaging in "undercover marketing" online. Basically they hire pieces of shit with zero respect for their fellow man to join as many message boards as they can to promote their products. The shill joins Video Game Board A and posts something like "Hey, have you guys played THIS GAME yet? It's awesome!" (whether the game is a steaming pile of dung or not); he then joins Video Game Board B and posts the same; and keeps doing this, message board after message board after message board.

Most of these human waste products are easy to spot, since they join a community and instantly begin spouting all sorts of marketing crap, or posting links to dozens of commercial websites, or whatever. They've begun to grow more sophisticated however - some shills are savvy enough to join dozens, even hundreds, of message boards, not making a lot of overt posts but instead slowly becoming a part of the community, building trust, so that when they DO pass on their "reviews" no one suspects they are actually on the company's payroll.

It really is sick when you think about it. It would be like me joining the local basketball team, hanging out with the guys, getting to know everyone, occasionally mentioning that "oh these sneakers are great!" - the whole time just pretending to be part of the group so I can sell them sneakers.

Here are some excerpts from "Penny Arcade" talking about this sort of thing - the first from "Guerilla Marketing" and the second from "Mr. (Penetrat)ed":

Quote:
Hey guys,

I interviewed for a guerilla marketing business in San Francisco that targeted web forums.

I was told that if I accepted the job, I was to have at LEAST 50 identities on as many forums as I could muster (they wanted 100 eventually), with a goal of 5 posts an hour. The posts had to be well thought out, and the idea was that I was to establish multiple identities with a history on the forums, so that when the timing was right a well written but subtly placed marketing post could be finessed in. And regular visitors would recognize the post as coming from a long time poster.

They had 12 people working there full time, and were hiring 10 more. You do the math. No wait, I'll do it for you: that's 880 posts a day (if minimum was met). However he said the better ones could do around 8 or 10 an hour. And they had different "verticals" so there was the sports guy, and the games guy, the hentai, excuse me I mean anime guy, etc.

But the most critical point was this: develop and integrate the identity. No random "HEY EB GAMES IS AWESOME BUY THIS" stuff.

Kinda spooky.

Didn't take the job. It was a fucking mill.

Wanna know about marketing, ask a Marketer. Here's a couple nifty bits for ya:
1) I have in my possession a marketing plan for NBA LIVE 2004 (don't ask how I got it... ). This marketing plan actually refers to "Hiring viral specialists to advocate NBA Live online via chat rooms targeting gaming fan sites" and "Placing offensive, defensive and PR shills into common gaming chat arenas." It goes on to outline a full page of tactics for said "Guerilla Online Marketing for Core Gamers."

2) I actually hired a company called Hype Council (http://www.hypecouncil.com). These guys do a TON of gaming related stuff -- I actually wouldn't be surprised if it's the company referred to in your news post. Their technique is quite insidious. Let's say they were hired to pump up PA (not like you need the buzz, but whatever...). Using one of the hundreds of shill accounts they have across the net, they post a new thread that says something like "hey guys, I've been looking for some new web comics to read. Anybody have any recommendations?" This is non-threatening, and gets the community engaged. They then wait a couple days and post again, this time with "Well, I asked some friends and they suggested I check out Penny Arcade <insert link>. I thought it was pretty funny, although I didn't like all the cuss words. What do you guys think?" Again, seeking engagement, they now have stealthily inserted the client's link, thereby encouraging trial. It's all very measurable and very effective. You should see the monthly reports you get from these guys: everything is detailed. Spooky.
It's all very insidious and, I'm sure, widespread. So much so that I don't trust anything I read. Unless it's a board where I "know" the posters, I always assume everyone on the board is a shill.

People suck.

Thanks for the novel. I had no idea these people worked for companies. I probably was just like everyone else and thought it was just another member of a board. I'll def. look out for people like that. Do they make some sort of commison or something? Very intresting. I feel like a ree ree because I think I fell for the trap once or twice. When did this stuff all a sudden start blowing up?

My guess on how long this sort of thing has been going on would be something like "the day after it was technically possible".

It's just become more prominent (or at least more revealed) in the past couple/few years.

Nothing with the balls, the keyword here is virgin. Read zyxwvvwxyz's other posts on this board and you'll see what it's about. (don't ask which 1, he's made thousands of 'em)
